Our Tips for Visiting St Petersburg

  1. Employ the services of a guide to assist you with Customs and to orientate you with St Petersburg. We would highly recommend the services of Vladimir Ivankiv. vladimir@sailrussia.spb.ru PH: +7 (921) 9325831

  1. If using a guide have a clear understanding of what you want to achieve while using their services. For us it was to get an understanding of how to get around St Petersburg, do an introductory tour and to use the services of a car and driver to go to Peterhof which is about thirty kilometres from St Petersburg centre. We also used Vladimir on our final day to assist with provisioning the boat.

  1. Come with plenty of good water and be prepared to buy bottled water which is surprisingly cheap as even the locals don’t recommend drinking St Petersburg water.

  1. Fuel was on our trip around 0.70 euro per litre so worth considering.

  1. Have a sense of humour and travel with a smile.

  1. Facilities at Central Yacht Club were adequate but limited and in need of an upgrade but if you can adapt to limited access to showers and toilets then its all good.

  1. Bring Ear Plugs! The marina is surrounded by nightclubs who are in competition with each other to see how loud they can send out their music till around 6am in the morning, every morning. It’s a bit like sleeping near a train station and after a while I think you get use to it – either that or we were drinking more vodka then we realised!

  1. When clearing back into Finland with the Frontier Guard if you have the time stay a day at Haapasari and enjoy the tranquility of the anchorage after the pace of St Petersburg.
