Heading for the Peloponnese

Monday 5th September

The Cyclades are known for the Meltimi wind in summer. A strong wind that blows from the north for several days before finaly subsiding. When a Meltimi is on its way the best option is to find a safe enjoyable anchorage out of the way.

The picturesque town of Poros on the Peloponnese

With a Meltimi forecast we headed west to the island of Poros on the Peloponnese a peninsular that is connected to the mainland by the Corinth Bridge.

Catching up in Poros with Aussies

Here after an interesting 4km (2.5m) dinghy ride ashore we were reacquainted with Rose and Paul. It had been a few years since we were altogether in Darwin so there was a lot to catch up on.

Touring with Locals

After a day on anchor sitting out the blow it was finally deemed safe enough to head back to shore on the 7th to join Rose and Paul driving the area and visiting a few of their favourite places in the region. They definitely highlighted a few beautiful harbors that we look forward to visiting with Katherine in the future includng Nafplio and Vivarian Bay.

Monemvasia

Thursday 8th September Bay of Vidhiou Poros To Monemvasia

In the south of the Peloponnese is  the impressive port of Monemvasia. Founded in the 6th century and at its peak in the 15th century Monemvasia was home to a population of some 50,0000 people. That fact I am still coming to terms with.

Photo: Gateway to the upper ancient city

A fortified city based on two levels. The upper level was accessed via a lot of steep steps and through the remaining city gate that then lead to a plateau of ruins and the restored 13th Century Church Agia Dofia.

The lower village enclosed by the fortified walls was a maze of narrow alleyways bustling with tourists. Another visit is on the list for this town. So many alley ways and areas to further explore.

Mutlitasking Harbour Master and Restaurant owner Mateos

We had committed to dinner back at the harbour at the restaurant of the harbour master Mateos. One doesn’t disappoint the harbour master and we are happy to say his promised fish didn’t disappoint either.
