Heading to Mykonos to visit Delos

Anchorage Proteos Delos Powerboat anchor nightmare

Sunday 17th September - Paros to Little Delos to Mykonos

From Paros we sailed a very short distance north to check out the historical island of Delos. We overnighted in the bay of Proteos where we felt for the crew of a power boat that spent many hours trying to untangle their twisted anchor.

The ideal way to visit Delos would have been from our own boat but the small anchorage and forecasted weather from the north meant a two night stay in Mykonos – so not all bad.

Delos is a UNESCO world heritage site whose history as a place of worship dates beyond its roll in Greek Mythology as the place where Artemis and Apollo were born. “it was a major religious center and port during the 1st millennium B.C.” Our guide was full of historical information which became mine boggling as we walked through the ancient ruins. Time to read up on Greek History!

Returning to the old harbour from the Delos tour provided some picture card images of old town Mykonos.

Our time in Mykonos was completed with the mandatory wonder through narrow streets and a meal at a taverna tucked down an alley way.
